The MLB season is right around the corner! I can’t wait for the season to start, so let’s talk about 5 players that I think are going to breakout this year. Included is what I think is a key card for each to add to your collection if you agree with me that they will have a big year. I am also going to list roughly what those cards are currently valued at (eBay sales) so we can take a look at the end of the season and see how they compare!
1. Riley Greene- 2020 Bowman Chrome Sapphire Auto (PSA 9 - $50; PSA 10 - $90). I think the Tigers will improve this year and Riley Greene will become their leader.
2. Yoan Moncada- 2017 Topps Chrome Auto (BGS 9.5/10 - $25). Yoan has had trouble staying healthy throughout his career, but when he is, he is really good. I think he is due to have a strong season, stay healthy and really put up some numbers alongside Luis Robert.
3. Brenton Doyle- 2020 Bowman Chrome 1st Auto (Raw - $15). As a rookie, he won a Gold Glove in CF and his bat heated up in September. I think BD carries that over into this year and is really someone to watch out for.
4. Nolan Jones- 2023 Topps Inception Rookie Patch Auto /75 (Raw - $20). Nolan Jones just raked last year for the Rockies and this year he joins the elite of the game.
5. Oneil Cruz- 2022 Topps Chrome Black Auto /99 (Encased - $120). Cruz is coming back from injury and I think he shows up and shows out. He has a ton of talent, so he is definitely one to take notice of, and he will impress this year.
I can’t wait for the year to start! Let me know some of your breakout players, and which cards you think are their must have cards!
Next up are my picks for the AL & NL Award Winners and Pennant Winners, along with some go-to cards for those guys as well.

A hot topic in the hobby recently has been the soon to release 2024 Topps Big League set. While an awesome and affordable product for kids who collect, there is a lot of buzz surrounding the short printed cards of the “hobby influencers”. I don’t want to comment on the choices made, but instead would like to offer up some ideas for the next batch for the 2025 version of these SP’s. Chris Carlin of Collectors (and formerly Upper Deck) is a great ambassador for the hobby and has an awesome way of finding positivity in collecting. John Newman of Sports Card Nation is a lifelong collector and over the past 5-6 years turned his passion into making probably more podcast content than anyone else in the hobby, always bringing the passion and always willing to help other collectors. Beau Thompson aka One Million Cubs Project is one of most recognizable collectors at card shows and I feel like we have all enjoyed watching his amazing journey and he’s almost there! Dr. James Beckett has been a leader in the hobby for decades and has shared his knowledge with so many collectors that I don’t even know how we can compute it! His podcasts over the past few years are very informative and have helped to let all collectors learn from him. A few more ideas which I think would be really cool are some former and current players who are big collectors and share their love for collecting with all of us like Pat Neshek, Phil Hughes and Matt Strahm! I think the inserts are a cool idea for kids and collectors to have a chance to pull and I hope we can share some of the names I listed here with all of the hobby! Who would you like to see in the 2025 Hobby Influencers inserts? Give me a shout and let me know!
That’s all for this time, Hobby Fam! Take care and enjoy Opening Day!!!
Thanks for reading!
Peace out!
