Have you heard that Lionel Messi was playing in the United States for Inter Miami?
We all know that you’re aware as Messi Mania has dominated the American news cycle in the weeks leading up to the NFL and College Football seasons beginning at the end of August.
Messi has scored goals upon goals since he joined Inter Miami last month and yet we’ve not seen a Lionel Messi card with him in an Inter Miami jersey.
It appears that the Leagues Cup, the first-year tournament that includes clubs from Major League Soccer and Liga MX, does not have a deal to make the on-demand cards that ‘Topps Now’ and ‘Panini Instant’ have flooded the market with.
That’s a massive mistake from everyone at Leagues Cup and, in a larger sense, Soccer United Marketing.
There should have been a limited-run card made for every goal that Messi has scored in the Leagues Cup as well as some supplemental items that included David Beckham.
These companies would have printed money if they had the rights to sell Messi cards from the Leagues Cup. They aren’t and we’re all left confused by this wasted opportunity.
Purchase for the future: Mykhailo Mudryk 2023 Topps UEFA Club Comps Inferno Foil Rookie
Mudryk joined Chelsea last season and has yet to become the player they envisioned when signing him from Shakhtar Donetsk in Ukraine. I believe he will be a top player so acquiring a rookie insert of his was a priority.
Random Memorabilia Item of the Month: Dortmund foam finger
I had the opportunity to cover the friendly between Chelsea and Dortmund at Soldier Field in Chicago. As a journalist, I try to stop by ‘fan fests’ or designated gathering places before these types of exhibitions because you tend to get a decent grasp of the types of fans who are in attendance. It also gives me the ability to find giveaways.
The foam finger is a glorious item that, when given away for free, is highly sought-after for this writer. It’s something I’d never buy for myself but it does make for a nice item to put next to other memorabilia.
Product I’m not a fan of: 2022-23 Panini Chronicles Soccer
Look through the checklist. There are desirable cards but a whole bunch of value-free items.
Product I think I like: Any Leaf Football under $15
There are few better things than the moment you think you’re going to end up with a Bryce Young autograph only to get three of the same autographs from Bowling Green’s 10th linebacker.
