Silver Spring, MD - November 24, 2023 - Huggins & Scott’s Fall Catalog Auction kicked off today with more than 1,400 lots of vintage sport and non-sport items. The auction is headlined by a 1909 T204 Ramly Walter Johnson PSA EX 5, which is considered by many hobby enthusiasts to be the true rookie card of “Big Train.” The event will run through Thursday, December 7 with initial bids closing at 9 PM ET.
The event features several notable collections ranging from fresh-to-the-hobby rare autographs and photos to desirable mid-century comics.
The Timely Comics Collection
The superhero craze boomed throughout the WWII era, and Timely was at the forefront with iconic heroes Captain America, Human Torch, Sub-Mariner, and Angel. Also on hand were sidekicks Bucky and Toro, who enjoyed starring roles in the Young Allies title. The auction includes dozens of comics from 1940-1955. Many issues star the big three characters Human Torch, Sub-Mariner, or Captain America in their own titles and others, such as Marvel Mystery Comics. Comics from this era are greatly prized in today's market, especially those published during the war years, as they are exceptionally tough to find.
The Arthur "Dutch" Bergman Collection
A halfback for Notre Dame from 1915-1916, and 1919 playing under legendary coach Knute Rockne and alongside George Gipp, Bergman went on to a lengthy career as a college football coach. Bergman also spent one year in the NFL, leading the Washington Redskins to the 1943 NFL Championship Game. Held by the Bergman family for more than one hundred years, more than a dozen relics make their way to the market for the first time. Numerous items border on sacred, including three Notre Dame team photos and a fantastic individual photo signed by Bergman’s teammate George Gipp (win one for “The Gipper”).
The Gainesville Autograph Collection
The first installment of a remarkable autograph accumulation is offered in this auction, with more offerings slated for 2024. Highlighted by signed cards, including a near-complete 1957 Topps set as well as key rookies of Hank Aaron and Jim Brown, the collection was assembled over a period of many years with figures from all areas of sport and non sport. Tens of thousands of cut signatures, index cards, and other mediums are present spanning nearly a century of famous figures.
