REA Kicks Off 2024 with Loaded January Auction Led by 1952 Topps Mantle and Hundreds of Signed Items

Chester, NJ - January 11, 2024 - Robert Edward Auctions opened its January Encore Auction on Friday with nearly 3,700 items traversing more than 180 years of sports history. Leading the way is a 1952 Topps #311 Mickey Mantle SGC FAIR 1.5 (Lot 1), with items dating all the way back to an Alexander Cartwright signed receipt from 1842 (Lot 13) and more than 250 other high-quality signed items from some of the game’s most iconic names. The auction will run through Sunday, January 21 with initial bids closing at 9 PM ET.



Other notable items in REA’s January Auction include:

  • 1888 N403 Yum Yum Tobacco John Clarkson Throwing PSA EX 5 - This is the only PSA-graded example at any level of this card featuring the 19th Century Hall of Famer pitcher and outfielder (Lot 2)

  • 1914 E145 Cracker Jack #37 Grover Alexander SGC VG 3 - A desirable Hall of Fame rookie example from the condition-sensitive 1914 series (Lot 4)

  • 1986 Topps Football #374 Steve Young Rookie SGC GEM MINT 10 - Only one of three examples of this card ever given a perfect GEM MINT 10 grade by SGC (Lot 5)

  • Babe Ruth Cut Signature PSA/DNA GEM MINT 10 - Unlined sheet signed in black pencil by the Great Bambino with a signature graded GEM MINT 10 by PSA/DNA (Lot 6)

  • 1938 Lou Gehrig Signed Postcard PSA/DNA GEM MINT 10 - Postmarked April 26, 1938, from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania inscribed "Best Wishes/Lou Gehrig" on the front in blue ink with the signature graded GEM MINT 10 by PSA/DNA (Lot 7)

  • 1924 Walter Johnson Signed Album Page PSA/DNA GEM MINT 10 - 1924 album page signed by Walter Johnson "Very Truly Yours/Walter Johnson" in black ink with the signature graded GEM MINT 10 by PSA/DNA (Lot 8)

  • 1939 Honus Wagner Signed Baseball Centennial First-Day Cover PSA/DNA GEM MINT 10 - The envelope bears a "Jun 12, 1939, Cooperstown N.Y." postmark and a three-cent Baseball Centennial stamp with a design paying homage to Wagner and including an actual photo of him and a short biography; the signature has been graded GEM MINT 10 by PSA/DNA (Lot 9)

  • 1883 Harry Wright Signed Personal Scorecard PSA/DNA MINT 9 - This scorecard is from a June 22, 1883 game between Philadelphia and the Providence Grays, whom Wright was managing, and is scored in both pencil and blue ink while Wright’s signature at the base of the scorer’s box has been graded MINT nine by PSA DNA (Lot 14)

  • 1910-1911 M116 Sporting Life Honus Wagner Pastel Background PSA Authentic - With a similar look to Wagner’s legendary T206, his Sporting Life card has become highly-coveted across the hobby (Lot 46)

  • Trio of 1954 Topps #128 Hank Aaron Rookies - Two attractive mid-grade examples (Lots 62 & 64) and one featuring a perfect PSA/DNA GEM MINT 10 signature (Lot 63)

  • 1957 Topps Football #138 Johnny Unitas Rookie BVG NM-MT 8 - A card that’s hard to find in high grades of one of football’s greatest field generals (Lot 66)



  • Pair of early Michael Jordan cards -  MJ’s Star Company 1984 Gold Medalist card (Lot 69) along with his 1985 Star Company Basketball card (Lot 70), graded Beckett NM-MT 8 and MINT 9, respectively, actually predate his iconic 1986 Fleer rookie



Signed Checks

Signed checks are unique collectors pieces and this event includes ten with beautiful signatures from some of the game’s most legendary players. These include checks signed by Jackie Robinson in 1948 (Lot 10), a year after he broke Major League Baseball’s color barrier, one from Ty Cobb in 1949 (Lot 11), and one signed by Roberto Clemente from 1970 (Lot 12).


Hundreds of T206 Options

From a Ty Cobb Portrait Red Background PSA EX-MT 6 (Lot 3) to a Frank Chance Portrait Yellow Background PSA NM 7 (Lot 23), this auction contains more than 720 T206 options. This also includes dozens of rare advertising backs including a Ty Cobb Bat Off Shoulder PSA VG-EX 4 with an El Principe De Gales back (Lot 24), a Cy Young Bare Hand Show SGC POOR 1 with a Sovereign 150 back, and a range of Red Hindu and Black Lenox cards representing the only examples graded at their respective levels. There are also nine T206 cards featuring the rare Carolina Brights backs.
